The “Аффинаж” group returns an element of the primordially Russian spirit to modern music, using in its palette good old folk instruments with a centuries-old history: a button accordion, an acoustic guitar, a trombone and the four of them manage to sound like a whole orchestra! Surprisingly, with all this sincerity, the audience of “Аффинаж” consists of young people who in the evening can go on a new-fashioned electronic rave, and in the morning have a quiet breakfast under “Аффинаж”. The group was founded in St. Petersburg in 2012 and plays in the noir-chanson genre that they invented. According to the leader Em Kalinin, a similar label is an attempt to isolate from already existing tags, to find their own face. Critics often rank “Refining” to the genre of Russian rock, but despite this, the group does not fit into the usual matrix: musicians find new ways to stand out and non-broken sound solutions in their work. The Billboard Daily described their music as “dramatic acoustic rock with trombone and bayan”. As the leader of “Аффинаж” says: “Our music is often not for love at first sight. But if they really fall in love, then it is strong and for a long time”.
